The government may increase fuel prices from next month if needed, Energy Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmud Tuku said on Tuesday.
Responding to a question in parliament, he said fuel prices are adjusted monthly under existing policy, and a decision for the coming month will be taken after review.
“If it is found necessary, we will discuss and place it before the cabinet for consideration,” the minister said.
He noted that global energy markets have become unstable due to tensions in the Middle East, particularly disruptions linked to shipping restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite this, he said Bangladesh has maintained stable fuel prices in April, considering industrial needs and the cost of living.
The minister also said the country currently has adequate fuel reserves, with additional supplies scheduled to arrive by the end of the month.
He added that authorities are working to ensure uninterrupted supply while monitoring the market to prevent illegal hoarding.
According to the minister, hundreds of drives have been conducted across the country, leading to thousands of cases, arrests and fines, along with the recovery of large amounts of fuel.
He said such enforcement operations will continue to maintain stability in the fuel market.
