BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has stated that Nurul Haque, president of the Gan Adhikar Parishad, was assaulted with the intent to kill.
Speaking during a visit to see Nurul Haque at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Whoever carried out this attack did so with the purpose of killing—it is very clear.”
He also questioned the role of law enforcement agencies in the incident, saying, “Even after a popular movement, attacks are being carried out against our leaders.”
Mirza Fakhrul urged that the judicial inquiry commission formed to investigate the assault conclude its work swiftly and that appropriate action be taken. He also called on the government to arrange for Nurul Haque’s treatment abroad.
The attack occurred last Friday evening in Kakrail, Dhaka, during a clash between leaders and activists of the Jatiya Party (JaPa) and the Gan Adhikar Parishad. The confrontation happened when a procession organized by the Gan Adhikar Parishad passed by the JaPa office. Law enforcement personnel used batons during the incident, leaving several injured, including Nurul Haque, who suffered a head injury and a fractured nose. He has since been receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The Gan Adhikar Parishad has claimed that their procession was attacked by JaPa leaders and activists, while JaPa has alleged that the Gan Adhikar Parishad members initiated the assault.
