In a shocking turn of events, a high-ranking Russian military officer lost his life in a deadly blast that took place early on Tuesday morning in Moscow.

The explosion, which was triggered by a device planted inside a scooter, took the life of Igor Kirillov, who led Russia’s armed forces’ chemical, biological, and radiation defense troops. His deputy was also killed in the blast.

The blast occurred outside a building on Ryazansky Avenue in southeastern Moscow, just as Kirillov and his deputy were leaving the premises.

The Russian Investigative Committee confirmed the details, stating, “An explosive device planted in a scooter parked near the entrance of a residential building was activated on the morning of December 17.”

According to reports, the explosion caused serious damage, shattering windows and badly damaging the front door of the building. Russian media shared images showing the aftermath of the blast.

Kirillov had been serving as the commander of these special defense forces since 2017. In October, he was sanctioned by the United Kingdom over the alleged use of chemical weapons in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

This tragic incident takes place as Russia‍‍`s military operations in Ukraine, which the country calls a “special military operation,” are nearing their third anniversary.
