Charges framed against ex-DMP commissioner, 7 others for Chankharpul killings

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has formally framed charges against eight individuals, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, in connection with the killing of six people in the Chankharpul area during the July uprising in Dhaka.

The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mojumder, passed the order on Monday. The other members of the bench include Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.

The tribunal rejected the discharge petitions filed by the accused and proceeded to indict them for crimes against humanity.

The charges stem from an incident on August 5 last year, when six individuals were allegedly shot dead in the Chankharpul area during a mass uprising.

Apart from former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, the other accused are: former Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ramna Zone Shah Alam Md Akhtarul Islam, former Assistant Commissioner of Ramna Zone Mohammad Imrul, former Shahbagh Police Inspector Md Arshad Hossain, and police constables Md Sujon Hossain, Imaaz Hossain, and Md Nasirul Islam.

Of the eight accused, the first four remain absconding, while the remaining four have been arrested and were presented before the tribunal today.

The tribunal has scheduled August 10 for opening statements in the case, where the prosecution will outline the key facts and evidence. Witness testimony is set to begin the following day, on August 11.
