Evaly CEO Russell, wife Shamima jailed for a year

The former CEO of Bangladeshi e-commerce company Evaly, Md. Russell, and his wife, Chairperson Shamima Nasrin, have each been sentenced to one year in jail by a Chattogram court in a check fraud case.

On Sunday, June 2nd, Joint Metropolitan Judge Md. Mohiuddin delivered the verdict. The Assistant Public Prosecutor for the state, M S Hossain Sahed, confirmed the news. Hossain Sahed stated, "The court has sentenced the Evaly couple, Russell and Shamima, to one year in prison for dishonoring a check worth 180,000 Taka. Additionally, they have been ordered to

pay an equivalent amount as a fine."

The plaintiff‍‍`s lawyer, Shahriar Tanim, mentioned, "From the beginning of the trial, Russell and Shamima were absent in court. The judge delivered the verdict in their absence on Sunday."

It is noteworthy that on September 16, 2021, Russell and Shamima were arrested from their Mohammadpur residence in Dhaka on charges of fraud and embezzlement. Shamima was released on bail in April 2022, followed by Russell on December 19, 2022. The case was filed by Jasim Uddin Abid, a resident of Hamzar Bagh area in Chattogram‍‍`s Panchlaish.
