The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has recovered four cheques amounting to Tk 22.5 million (Tk 2.25 crore) from the residence of Abdur Razzak bin Sulaiman alias Riyad, a former leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Razzak was recently arrested for allegedly demanding extortion from the residence of former MP Shammi Ahmed in Gulshan.

The information was disclosed at a press briefing held at the DMP Media Center on Wednesday. Deputy Commissioner of DMP‍‍`s Media and Public Relations Division, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, said that the cheques were recovered following interrogation of the arrested suspects.

Based on their statements, law enforcers found the cheques, and a separate case is being processed at Kalabagan Police Station.

Razzak, who was formerly a central committee member of the Bangladesh Democratic Student Union—a group formed by leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement—has been permanently expelled from the organization following his arrest.

Before the formation of the Democratic Student Union, Razzak served as joint convener of the combined private university wing of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, a position he was appointed to in February this year.

At the press briefing, Talebur Rahman also outlined heightened police operations across Dhaka to ensure public safety and maintain law and order. According to DMP’s Crime Command and Control Center, a total of 471 patrol teams were deployed in the last 24 hours, including 259 at night and 212 during the day.

These included 212 mobile patrols, 20 foot patrols, and 27 motorcycle patrols. In addition, 66 police checkpoints were established at key and strategic locations across the capital.

As part of these operations, 186 individuals were arrested over the past 24 hours for various crimes, including one for robbery, five for theft, 13 for drug dealing, two for fraud, and 12 who were wanted under existing warrants. Police also seized 11 mobile phones used in criminal activities, one vehicle, and Tk 13,180 in cash.

Additionally, law enforcers recovered 10,065 yaba pills, 1.04 kg of cannabis, 74 bottles of Phensedyl, and one gram of heroin. A total of 33 cases were filed at different DMP police stations.

The DMP’s Wari Division also recovered 123 stolen mobile phones in the past 24 hours and arrested five individuals involved in the thefts. In a separate operation, DB Tejgaon arrested two members of the notorious "Kobji Kata Anwar" gang—Mohammad Nishat (22) and Mohammad Russell alias Pasting Russell (23).From January to July this year, DMP recorded 33 robbery cases, 248 muggings, 154 murders, and 1,068 thefts. Currently, 7,812 cases remain under investigation.

Regarding traffic enforcement, the DMP issued 2,845 citations in the past 24 hours for traffic violations, impounded 282 vehicles through dumping, and towed 92 vehicles. The DMP traffic division continues operations to maintain order on Dhaka‍‍`s roads.

When asked about a sudden increase in alert status, Deputy Commissioner Talebur Rahman clarified, “There is no specific reason for the heightened alert. We are simply maintaining maximum vigilance to ensure the law and order situation remains stable.”
