Court imposes temporary ban on GM Quader’s organisational activities in Jatiya Party

A Dhaka court has temporarily barred Jatiya Party Chairman Golam Mohammad (GM) Quader and the party’s Joint Office Secretary Mahmud Alam from engaging in any organisational activities.

The order came from the Dhaka First Joint District Judge’s Court, where Judge Md Nurul Islam issued the injunction on July 30.

The following day, the court’s bench assistant, Sakhawat Hossain, confirmed the ruling to the media.

Alongside the injunction, the court also reinstated the party posts and primary memberships of ten senior Jatiya Party leaders. These include Senior Co-Chairmen Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud and ABM Ruhul Amin Hawlader, Secretary General Mujibul Haque Chunnu, Office Secretary-2 M.A. Razzak Khan, and Presidium Members Solaiman Alam Seth from Chattogram, Nazma Akter from Feni, Md. Zahirul Islam Zahir from Tangail, Mostafa Al Mahmud from Jamalpur, Jasim Uddin from Netrokona, and Arifur Rahman Khan from Gazipur.

According to Abdul Bari, the lawyer representing the plaintiff, the court has instructed that until further orders, GM Quader must refrain from participating in the party’s internal functions.

At the same time, the ten expelled leaders have been restored to their positions, as the court found their dismissal unlawful during the ongoing legal proceedings.

In its ruling, the court observed that the decisions made by GM Quader to remove these individuals from the party were taken while the matter was still sub judice.

As a result, the court temporarily prohibited Quader and Mahmud Alam from exercising powers under Article 20(1)(Ka) of the party’s constitution.

It also directed that the party’s operations continue based on seniority among its leadership.

The case stems from long-standing disputes over GM Quader’s leadership. The complaint alleges that on July 18, 2019, GM Quader was declared party chairman by then-Secretary General Moshiur Rahman Ranga in violation of party procedures.

Later, on December 28 of that year, Quader reportedly held an unauthorised council session where a new party constitution was approved.

Most recently, on June 28, 2025, Quader dismissed seven presidium members and subsequently removed three more, stripping them of both party posts and memberships. Their names were also removed from the Jatiya Party’s official website.

The legal battle reflects a deepening internal rift within the Jatiya Party, raising questions about leadership legitimacy and the interpretation of the party’s internal laws.
