In Sylhet`s South Surma upazila, a truck and a pickup van collided head-on, resulting in 14 fatalities after two of the injured who were transported there were later pronounced dead.
According to Sudip Das, additional deputy commissioner (media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, the deceased were identified as Rashid Mia, 50, Md Saheed Noor, 50, Sourav Mia, 27, Badsha, 22, Meher, 25, Harich Mia, 65, Md Eklim Mia, 55, Sijil Mia, 55, Sadhu Mia, 40, Dulal Mia, 25, Aolad Hossain, 50, Shaheen Mia, 40, Aolad Mia, 50, and Amina Begum, 45.
A pickup vehicle carrying construction workers was traveling to the Goalabazar region of Sylhet`s Osmaninagar upazila. The pickup van flipped when a potato-laden vehicle traveling in the opposite way hit head-on with it.
The incident was described by injured worker Pallab Ahmed when he regained consciousness at MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Police believed that the truck`s driver was sleepy. It was traveling from Munshiganj to Sylhet. The collision happened this morning at 5:45 am on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in the Kutubpur neighborhood of South Surma upazila.
Sudip Das said, eleven construction workers passed away immediately, while one other was pronounced dead after being transferred to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The police officer stated that as of 11:00am, two more workers had passed away from their injuries, bringing the total to 14.
