Three students from the University of Chittagong (CU) went missing early Tuesday morning after being swept away by strong waves while bathing at Cox’s Bazar sea beach. One of them has been found dead, while two others remain unaccounted for.

The deceased has been identified as K.M. Sadman Rahman Sabab, a first-year student of the Development Studies department (2023–24 session). The missing students are Asif Ahmed and Aritra Hasan, both from the same department.

According to eyewitnesses and classmates who accompanied the victims, five students — four from the Development Studies department and one from the Arabic department — traveled to Himchari in Cox’s Bazar on Monday evening.

After spending the night there, three of them entered the sea around 5:30 AM to bathe. Moments later, a strong wave swept them away.

One of the surviving students recounted, “We called out for help from local fishermen. They came quickly but couldn’t rescue them in time. After some searching, they recovered Sabab’s body, but the other two have not been found yet.”

University Assistant Proctor and faculty member of the Development Studies department, Saeed Bin Kamal Chowdhury, confirmed the incident. “The students went on the trip on their own. One body has been recovered by local fishermen, and the rest are still missing. We’ve contacted the local police, and they are actively conducting search operations. Families of the missing students have been informed. Additionally, some senior students from our department are on their way to Cox’s Bazar.”

Rescue efforts are ongoing as authorities and locals continue searching the sea for the missing students.
