Three members of the same family were beaten to death by locals in Cumilla’s Bangura Bazar area on Thursday morning, following allegations of involvement in drug smuggling.
The incident occurred around 10:30 am in Karuibari village, according to local police officials. The victims have been identified as Ruby Begum, 58, her son Russell, 35, and daughter Jonaki Akter, 27.
Law enforcement authorities confirmed that the trio was attacked by a group of villagers who accused them of long-term involvement in drug trafficking.
“Residents claimed these individuals were engaged in drug smuggling for quite some time,” said the officer-in-charge of Bangura Bazar Police Station, Mahfuzur Rahman. “They were beaten to death by locals. We are currently investigating the incident.”
Police are collecting statements from witnesses and trying to identify those involved in the mob attack.
The bodies have been sent for autopsy, and additional security measures have been taken in the area to prevent further unrest.
No arrests have been made yet, and law enforcement continues to assess whether the victims had any verifiable links to criminal activity.
