AL factional clash leaves 15 injured in Jhenaidah

At least fifteen people were injured in a clash between two groups of Awami League over establishing supremacy at village Toiltupi under Harinakundu upazila in Jhenaidah on Monday.

Identities of the injured could not be known immediately, Newage reports quoting officials.

Quoting local people, Harinakundu police station officer-in-charge Shaiful Islam said that there had been a long-standing dispute between Bhayna union Awami League activists Ripon Hossain and Yaqub Ali over establishing supremacy in the area.

The supporters of the two groups locked in an altercation over making a list of distributing blankets among the people on Sunday.

Following Sunday’s altercation, the two groups, one led by Ripon and another led by Yaqub, swooped on each other with locally made sharp weapons in the morning, leaving 15 people of both the groups injured.

Local people rescued the injured ones and took them to Harinakundu Upazila Health Complex and Kushtia General Hospital for treatment.

On information, a team of police went to the spot and brought the situation under control, the police official said.

Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to avert any kind of untoward situation, the OC added.

Ripon and Yaqub could not be reached over phone despite repeated attempts for their comments in this connection.
