Anti-discrimination leader accused of threatening civil surgeon with mob action

Imran Ahmed, district convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Rangpur, has been accused of issuing a mob threat to Rangpur Civil Surgeon Dr. Shahin Sultana during the district’s monthly law and order committee meeting on Sunday.

Dr. Sultana alleged that the threat was made during a discussion at the meeting, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal and attended by various government officials, political leaders, and professional representatives.

The incident is linked to an earlier case involving an alleged assault on Dr. Sabrina Musarrat Jahan, a physician at Taraganj Upazila Health Complex.

On April 11, she was allegedly verbally abused and physically attacked by Tahmid Sarkar—identified as the Taraganj coordinator of the anti-discrimination movement—and several others, after treating Tahmid’s father, who was later referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

A case was filed at Taraganj Police Station against Tahmid and four to five unidentified persons.

During the law and order meeting, Imran Ahmed reportedly raised the issue and demanded that the case be withdrawn.

Eyewitnesses at the meeting claimed that when the Civil Surgeon responded that the case was under judicial process and would follow due legal proceedings, Imran became agitated and stated, “If the case isn’t withdrawn, we will resort to mob action.”

Dr. Shahin Sultana later told reporters that she and her colleagues at the Taraganj Health Complex were feeling threatened and insecure following Imran’s remarks.

In response, Imran denied making a threat, saying, “There was an issue in Taraganj that I raised during the meeting because some of our boys were treated unfairly. I said that if such injustice continues, the mob might have been a better option. It wasn’t a direct threat.”

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal, however, downplayed the matter, saying, “There were no threats or heated arguments. I’m not sure why such rumors are circulating.”

The incident has sparked concern among health professionals in the region, with some calling for action to ensure their safety and uphold rule of law.
