Cabinet approves proposed budget for FY2026-27

The proposed national budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year has been approved at a special cabinet meeting. The meeting was held on Thursday morning at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban (National Parliament complex), chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury attended the meeting along with other cabinet members.

The approved budget will be presented in parliament later in the afternoon by the finance minister.

The size of the proposed budget for FY 2026–27 has been set at Tk 9.38 lakh crore, with a revenue target of Tk 6.95 lakh crore. The budget deficit stands at Tk 2.43 lakh crore.

To finance the deficit, the government plans to rely on both domestic and external sources. According to the proposal, Tk 1.16 lakh crore will come from foreign loans and grants, while Tk 1.27 lakh crore will come from domestic sources. Of this, Tk 1.12 lakh crore is expected from the banking sector and Tk 15,000 crore from savings certificates and other sources.

As per procedure, after cabinet approval, President Mohammed Shahabuddin will give formal assent.

The new fiscal year will come into effect on July 1.

The budget will be presented in parliament under the chairmanship of Speaker Hafez Uddin Ahmed, in the presence of the Prime Minister. This will be the 55th national budget, and the first budget presented by the finance minister in the current government’s tenure.
