Meat and eggs will be sold at a cheaper rate than the market price in at least 15 places in Dhaka from Thursday (March, 23), when the month of Holy Ramadan is supposed to start.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has taken the step of ensuring that people consume protein at a "cheaper rate" and sustain the supply chain during the month of Ramadan, Public Relations officer of the Ministry, Iftekhar Hossain, said today.
This was discussed at a meeting held on Sunday. The Department of Livestock (DLS) will conduct the sales, he added.
The prices for the products has been primarily fixed, said the Director of DLS, Reajul Huq.
"Each egg will be sold at Tk 10. The price of beef is fixed at Tk 640 per kg and the minimum quantity is half kg. Each person can buy a maximum of two packets, The price of mutton will be Tk 950 per kg", he said.
"People can buy dressed broiler chicken at Tk 340 per kg. In the market it is sold at Tk 380 to Tk 400," he added.
According to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh, the current price of each egg is Tk 11.25, beef Tk 750 per kg, mutton Tk 1,100 per kg and per kg live broiler is Tk 260.
"There will initially be 15 fixed selling locations in the city. That might increase to 20. The places are not finalised yet", said the Director of DLS.
Similar action was taken by the ministry from the first to the 28th last Ramadan. According to records, it sold beef at Tk 550 per kg, mutton at Tk 800, dressed broiler at Tk 200, and eggs at Tk 7.5.
