A man was shot dead and at least five others were injured early Thursday during a violent clash between two rival factions in Narsingdi Sadar upazila over local dominance.
The incident occurred around 5:00 am in Alokbali Union, where supporters of union BNP convener Shah Alam Chowdhury and expelled member-secretary Abdul Kaiyum Mia confronted each other. The area remains tense following the violence.
The deceased was identified as Idon Mia, 55, of Muradnagar village. The identities of the injured were not immediately available.
Local residents said tensions between the two groups had been simmering since August 5, 2024, over disputes linked to river sand extraction, territorial control, and political activities. Both factions reportedly held separate programs and maintained rival networks.
According to locals, although the conflict centered on BNP factions, activists from the ruling Awami League were also involved with both sides.
Police said the clash began when gunfire broke out during the confrontation, and the injured were taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, where Idon Mia died en route. Five others were admitted with gunshot wounds.
Shah Alam Chowdhury, convener of Alokbali Union BNP, alleged that Abdul Kaiyum’s group—comprising “hired criminals and defected Awami League men”—attacked Muradnagar village and that residents fought back in self-defense. Abdul Kaiyum could not be reached for comment.
Mohammad Emdadul Haque, officer-in-charge of Narsingdi Sadar Police Station, said police were deployed to the area to maintain order. “The situation is under full control. One person has been killed, and the body has been sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy,” he added.
