Four student children drowned in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi on Thursday afternoon. The incident took place in the Borokanda area of Chandrakandi Union.

The deceased were identified as Tabia, 13, daughter of Shamim Mia; Ayesha, 9, and Jannat, 8, daughters of Rubel Mia; and Sumaiya, 10, daughter of Billal Hossain. All four were students of Gausia Nure Madina Women’s Madrasa in the Borokanda area.

Police and locals said classes at the madrasa began on Thursday morning. During the tiffin break after classes, six students went to bathe in a nearby waterbody beside the madrasa.

At one point, one child slipped underwater, prompting five other children to jump in to rescue her. Three more children then drowned in the process. After receiving the news, madrasa authorities and local residents rushed to the spot and began a rescue operation.

Three of the children were taken to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead. Later, the body of another child was recovered.

Raipura Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mojibur Rahman said, “We received reports that three children had drowned. We found the bodies of three children at the hospital. We have also heard that another child has died. We are heading there.”
