Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed that, in addition to the national parliamentary elections, local government elections should also be held under a caretaker government system.
The party’s Naib-e-Ameer, Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, confirmed this position.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, June 19, during the fourth day of the second phase of the National Consensus Commission’s dialogue with political parties at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, Dr. Taher emphasized the need for an impartial election framework at all levels.
He stated that Jamaat supports balancing executive powers between the President and the Prime Minister as part of broader political reforms.
Regarding the presidential election, Dr. Taher mentioned that various political parties have proposed different models, but Jamaat principally supports an extended electoral college system.
Under the proposed structure, if the planned upper house of Parliament is introduced, the President would be elected through a secret ballot involving 300 members from the lower house and 100 members from the upper house.
Jamaat has also recommended that representatives from local government bodies be included in this process.
This would involve 64 district council chairmen, 12 city mayors, and approximately 70,000 local representatives, including union council chairmen and members, participating in the presidential election.
Dr. Taher added that most political parties have shown support for this model, and Jamaat is pleased with the proposed structure.
