A local leader of Jubo Dal was shot dead in Chattogram`s Raozan upazila on Saturday afternoon, triggering protests by party activists and prompting a police investigation.
The victim, Maksudul Haque Chowdhury Masud, 45, served as a senior joint convener of Rangunia Upazila Jubo Dal.
According to police and local residents, Masud was attacked near Pahartali Chowmuhani in Raozan at around 1:30pm. Witnesses said a group of unidentified assailants opened fire on him, leaving him critically injured. He died at the scene.
The motive behind the killing has not yet been confirmed. However, local residents suggested the incident may have been linked to a long-running dispute surrounding the sand trade in the area. Some also noted that Masud`s name had recently been discussed as a possible candidate for chairman in upcoming local government elections.
After receiving information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body for further legal procedures.
Raozan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam said law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation and are working to identify those responsible for the shooting.
"We are trying to determine the circumstances behind the murder and arrest the perpetrators," he said.
The killing sparked immediate reactions among Jubo Dal supporters. In protest, activists blocked the Kaptai road in the Ishakhali area and set fire to tyres, causing temporary disruption to traffic.
Demonstrators demanded the swift arrest of the attackers and called for exemplary punishment for those involved in the incident.
Police said efforts are continuing to restore normalcy in the area while the investigation progresses.
