Armed attackers opened fire on the Chattogram residence of former MP and Smart Group Managing Director Mujibur Rahman CIP early Saturday, sparking panic despite round-the-clock police deployment in the area.

Police said four masked men fired several rounds at the house in the Chandanpura area of Chawkbazar shortly before dawn.

The bullets shattered windowpanes on the second floor, but no one was injured. Mujibur Rahman and his family were inside the house at the time and were awakened by the gunshots.

CCTV footage of the incident, later circulated on social media, shows the attackers using modern firearms before fleeing through a road beside the Chaktai canal behind the house.

Chawkbazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Babul Azad confirmed the incident, saying the attackers completed the shooting within about 30 seconds and escaped.

“We are investigating the matter and will take legal action once those involved are identified,” he said.

This is the second attack on the same house in recent months.

On January 2, gunmen opened fire in front of the residence in a similar incident.

Following that attack, police arranged permanent security in front of the house.

Investigators believe the latest shooting was also linked to extortion, as the attackers targeted the rear side of the house this time, avoiding the police post at the front.

Sources said earlier threats included a demand for a large sum of money.

Police said both incidents were intended to intimidate the businessman.

Further investigation is underway.
