The Gopalganj district administration has reimposed Section 144 after a brief relaxation of a three-day curfew that followed violent clashes centering on a rally by the National Citizens` Party (NCP).
To maintain law and order, Gopalganj Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Muhammad Kamruzzaman issued the order on Saturday night around 10:30pm.
According to the announcement, Section 144 will be in effect from 6:00am to 8:00pm on Sunday.
Earlier, the curfew imposed on Wednesday evening was partially relaxed from Saturday 6:00am to 8:00pm. It was fully reinstated from 8:00pm Saturday to 6:00am Sunday.
Executive Magistrate of Gopalganj, Russell Munshi, stated that students, examinees, emergency services, and government offices will be exempt from the restrictions.
However, all forms of gatherings and movement of groups of people will be prohibited during the enforcement period.
Following the brief curfew relaxation, some shops reopened and vehicular movement resumed in parts of the city on Sunday morning. Law enforcement agencies remain on high alert to prevent further unrest.
The district administration said further decisions will be made based on discussions with law enforcement and assessment of the overall situation.
The renewed restrictions come after violent incidents broke out on Wednesday during the NCP rally, including repeated clashes, cocktail explosions, arson, and attacks across different parts of the city.
Section 144 was first imposed on that day, followed by the declaration of a full curfew from 6:00pm as the situation worsened.
