Seven prison officials, including the superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail, have been suspended over alleged negligence following the escape of a female inmate from the Gazipur prison.

The suspended officials are Superintendent Laila Anjuman Sumi, Marina, Rehena, and female prison guards Shayla, Sharmin, Jemi and Asma.

Md Jannatul Farhad, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Prisons, said the officials were suspended after a preliminary inquiry found evidence of negligence in the performance of their duties.

She said an investigation is underway to determine how the inmate managed to flee despite the prison‍‍`s security measures.

The inmate, identified as 21-year-old Rimpa from Gangni upazila in Meherpur, escaped from the prison on Thursday.

A case has been filed with Konabari Police Station under Gazipur Metropolitan Police over the incident.

According to prison authorities, Rimpa had been serving a three-month sentence handed down by a mobile court under Dhanmondi Police Station in Dhaka.

Prison officials said around 40 female inmates were carrying bricks inside the jail on Thursday evening when Rimpa allegedly exploited a security lapse, climbed over the prison wall and escaped.

The escape was later confirmed after prison authorities reviewed CCTV footage.

A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident, while the probe is continuing.
