Sumbul Rizvi has joined as the newly appointed Representative of the United Nations Refugee Agency UNHCR in Bangladesh.
According to a press release sent by UNHCR on Tuesday, Sumbul Rizvi is the twelfth representative appointed by UNHCR in Bangladesh. Appointed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, she will work with government, humanitarian agencies, civil society and refugees as UNHCR`s top official in Bangladesh.
In 2018, she launched a coordinated humanitarian aid program for Rohingya refugees in Cox`s Bazar as a coordinator on behalf of the United Nations.
Upon taking up her new role, Ms. Rizvi said "It`s an honour and a privilege to assume my role as UNHCR`s Representative in a nation celebrated for its profound humanitarian heart, sheltering close to a million refugees. Rejoining efforts to provide assistance to, and find solutions for, Rohingya refugees fills me with enthusiasm. I aim to continue strengthening our close cooperation with the Bangladeshi authorities, humanitarian and civil society partners, working hand in hand with the Government to ensure the wellbeing of Rohingya refugees and affected local communities."
