Police in Barguna’s Sadar Upazila recovered the bodies of a woman with her throat slit and her husband hanging from the ceiling inside their home on Sunday morning.
The victims were identified as 32-year-old Swapon Molla, a day laborer from South Itbaria village, and his 27-year-old wife Akleema, daughter of Abbas Mridha of the same village. The couple had two daughters: six-year-old Sadia and one-year-old Afsana.
Barguna Sadar police officer-in-charge (Investigation) Yunus Farazi said preliminary investigations suggest that Swapon killed his wife with a cleaver before hanging himself.
According to Swapon’s cousin Rajia Begum, “Early in the morning, Sadia ran to tell me that her mother wasn’t speaking and her father was nowhere to be seen. When I went inside, I found Akleema’s blood-stained body on the floor. Later, Swapon’s body was found hanging from a beam, with a mobile phone nearby.”
Swapon’s elder brother, Kabir Molla, said, “My brother had no enemies, but he often argued with his wife because he didn’t work regularly.” Akleema’s father, Abbas Mridha, also suggested the incident may have been caused by family disputes.
Officer Yunus Farazi added, “At this stage, the case appears to be a murder-suicide. Our CID team has arrived to conduct further investigation, and a postmortem will be carried out before legal action is taken.”
Barguna Sadar Police Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Yakub Hossain confirmed that the incident occurred overnight. The house has been cordoned off as a crime scene while authorities continue their investigation.
