Writer and researcher Badruddin Umar passes away at 94

Renowned writer, researcher, and leftist intellectual Badruddin Umar has passed away. He breathed his last on Sunday morning at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Dhaka. He was 94.

The news was confirmed to the media by National Liberation Council Secretary Fayzul Hakim Lala.

Umar had been suffering from various age-related complications for a long time. As his health deteriorated, he was taken to the hospital this morning, where he was pronounced dead at 10:05 am.

Badruddin Umar began his professional career as a part-time teacher at Dhaka University before going on to establish the Department of Sociology at Rajshahi University.

In his political career, he served as the president of the Bangladesh Peasants’ Federation and as the central coordinator of the Democratic Revolutionary Alliance. He was also a member of the central committee of the Communist Party of East Bengal.

In 2003, he founded the National Liberation Council, taking on the role of its president.
