Country’s law and order situation worsened, admits home adviser

Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, adviser to the ministry of home affairs, has acknowledged a deterioration in the country’s law and order situation following several recent incidents.

He made the remarks on Sunday (September 7) after inaugurating an election training program at the Rajarbagh Police Line, responding to questions from journalists.

Commenting on the current law and order scenario, the adviser said, “The situation had remained stable for a long time, but recent events indicate a slight downturn. We will try to restore it fully to its previous state.”

Addressing questions about the recent unrest in Rajbari and whether there were attempts to disrupt the elections internationally, he said, “We are investigating the Rajbari incidents. Once the investigation report is complete, we will provide detailed information. Five individuals involved have already been brought under the law. Further interrogations may reveal the full scope of the events.”

Regarding concerns over whether an impartial investigation could be conducted while the District Commissioner (DC) and Superintendent of Police (SP) remain in charge, the adviser said, “We will determine responsibility after completing the investigation. If anyone is found guilty, action will be taken; if someone is innocent, no action will be taken against them. I cannot declare anyone guilty before the investigation is complete.”

On questions about why mobs could not be stopped despite prior threats on social media in Rajbari and a similar incident in Hathazari, he said, “We are not failing. We have become less tolerant of such acts, and those responsible will be brought to justice. I urge everyone to remain patient.”

When asked whether these disturbances could affect voter turnout during elections, he replied, “Once the people move toward participating in the elections, no one will be able to stop them. They will be able to reach the polling centers without obstruction.”
