Information and Broadcasting Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud on Monday remarked that BNP is a barrier in the way of practicing democracy in Bangladesh.
"In fact, top BNP figures like Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir are working hard to sabotage democracy. They had made an effort to thwart the 2014 elections as part of the planned strategy. They made every attempt to cast doubt on the 2018 polls. Now since they want to destroy democracy, they are making a variety of assertions "said he.
The minister told reporters while replying to a query at Awami League central office in city's Bangabandhu Avenue.
According to Hasan, caretaker government system will not be reinstated in Bangladesh, and the current government will function as an election-period government similar to that of all other parliamentary democracies across the world. He mentioned how the current governments in India, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and other countries in continental Europe operate as election-time governments.
Even, he said, the president of the USA doesn't resign during the polls.
He csaid that the BNP and caretaker governments only exist in Pakistan. They wish to imitate Pakistan for this reason, but Hasan warned that Bangladesh's caretaker government will never return.
