The BNP has officially shared its stance on the proposed reform initiatives under the National Consensus Commission led by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
At a press conference held at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Sunday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir outlined the party’s support, reservations, and concerns regarding various reform proposals.
He stated that BNP has actively participated in the discussions of all six reform commissions and expressed agreement on the majority of recommendations, including key proposals related to the Anti-Corruption Commission, judiciary, public administration, and election reforms.
Notably, the party agreed to 141 out of 243 proposals from the Election Reform Commission, and 62 out of 89 proposals from the Judicial Reform Commission.
On constitutional reforms, the BNP supported key changes, including setting a term limit for the Prime Minister, amending Article 70, and reinstating the caretaker government system.
However, BNP expressed concern over proposals that could weaken elected governments and parliamentary authority. The party emphasized that reforms must not undermine democratic accountability or parliamentary sovereignty.
Mirza Fakhrul also warned against introducing sweeping changes without public involvement, stating that no commission or political group has the right to redefine fundamental aspects of governance without the people’s mandate.
He concluded by urging all stakeholders to prioritize national interest over partisan agendas and reaffirmed BNP’s commitment to building a just, inclusive, and democratic Bangladesh.
