The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a warning for possible landslides in hilly areas of Chattogram due to expected very heavy rainfall under the influence of south-west seasonal winds.

The forecast indicates that parts of Chattogram, Khulna, and Barishal divisions may experience extremely heavy rain within the 24 hours starting from 10am on Sunday.

Rainfall exceeding 88mm in 24 hours is classified as “very heavy,” raising concerns for flash floods and landslides in vulnerable regions.

Hilly areas in Chattogram, already prone to landslides during monsoon downpours, are at heightened risk, prompting calls for precautionary measures. Authorities have been advised to remain alert and take steps to minimize potential damage and casualties, particularly in settlements located at the base of hills or along slopes.

The weather bulletin also forecast moderate to heavy rainfall with gusty winds across most parts of Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, and in several areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, and Mymensingh divisions.

Maritime ports across the country, including Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra, have been advised to keep local cautionary signal No. 3 hoisted as a precaution against the turbulent weather.

Despite the heavy rainfall forecast, day and night temperatures are expected to remain relatively unchanged.
