A senior officer of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is facing internal investigation after delivering a politically charged speech at an event organized by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
The officer’s comments, which were made while in uniform, have sparked significant public backlash after a video of the speech went viral on social media.
Assistant Commissioner Shah Alam of DMP’s Lalbagh Division reportedly addressed the gathering on July 4 at the Salimullah Muslim Orphanage in Azimpur, Dhaka.
The event was hosted by Jamaat’s Dhaka-7 parliamentary candidate, Haji Enayet Ullah, and attended by senior Jamaat leaders, including Nurul Islam Bulbul, a member of the party’s central executive committee.
In his speech, the officer criticized the previous government and called for supporting “honest and qualified candidates” through what he described as a coming “voter revolution.”
He also urged attendees to strengthen grassroots political activity, saying, “We are the police; we must be connected with the patriotic public and work together with them.”
The DMP has since confirmed that it has initiated a departmental inquiry into the incident.
According to officials, a committee will assess whether the officer’s remarks violated service regulations, which prohibit government employees from engaging in political activities or making partisan statements.
Legal and policy analysts have described the speech as a serious breach of administrative code, stressing that uniformed officers must remain politically neutral in accordance with public service conduct rules.
The outcome of the investigation will determine what disciplinary measures, if any, will be taken against the officer.
