EC postpones Sherpur-3 election after Jamaat candidate’s  death

The Election Commission has decided to postpone the election in Sherpur-3 following the death of a contesting candidate from the constituency.

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said the Sherpur-3 election will be postponed and fresh election procedures will begin.

The Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Mohammad Nuruzzaman Badal died early Wednesday while receiving treatment at a hospital in Mymensingh. He passed away around 1:30am due to kidney-related complications.

Under Article 17 of the Representation of the People Order 1972, if a validly nominated candidate dies before withdrawing from the race, the Returning Officer must cancel the ongoing election process in that constituency. The law also says a fresh election must be held as if it were a new one.

However, the rules clarify that the remaining candidates do not need to submit new nomination papers or pay deposits again.

Five candidates were in the race from Sherpur-3 for the 13th parliamentary election scheduled for February 12. Besides Badal, the candidates are BNP’s Md Mahmudul Haque Rubel, Islami Andolan Bangladesh’s Abu Taleb Md Saifuddin, Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist)’s Md Mizanur Rahman, and independent candidate Md Aminul Islam.

The Election Commission had announced the election schedule on December 11, stating that the parliamentary election and a referendum on the July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) Implementation Order would be held together on February 12, 2026.
