In a show of support, hundreds of thousands of leaders and supporters from Awami League and its associate bodies are taking part in the party’s Dhaka rally on Wednesday.
The venue and surrounding areas reverberated with slogans including “We stand with our leader Sheikh Hasina”, as BNP is also holding a protest rally.
Dhaka south and north metropolitan units of Awami League are organising the programme at the south gate of Baitul Mukarram Mosque.
Rally participants, who came from different areas, vowed to stand for the party in a demonstration of AL’s formidable strength at the grassroots.
Themed on spreading the message of peace and development, the rally has been organised marking the birth anniversary of Sheikh Russel, Bangabandhu’s youngest son who was not spared from the brutal massacre that left 19 family members killed on the night of August 15, 1975.
A directive for AL activists to gather in the capital on Wednesday was issued by Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Monday.
The Awami League has laid out an elaborate schedule of programmes that will run from October 7 to October 18. The programme began with a teachers` gathering on October 7. The series of events will culminate in a public rally in Dhaka on the 18.
Regarding Wednesday’s programme, Quader had said, "In Dhaka city, we will block their (BNP’s) gatherings and prevent them from carrying out their plan. They are conspiring. Fakhrul is spreading rumours. He`s collecting news from thin air."
