Ban on GM Quader’s party activities and case withdrawn

The temporary court order barring Jatiya Party Chairman Golam Mohammad (GM) Quader and the party’s Joint Office Secretary Mahmud Alam from carrying out organizational activities has been lifted, along with the withdrawal of a related lawsuit.

On Tuesday, Acting Judge Robayet Ferdous of Dhaka’s First Joint District Judge Court passed the order after the plaintiffs applied to withdraw the case. The court granted the application and simultaneously lifted the earlier injunction on Quader and Alam’s political activities.

Quader’s lawyer, Monowar Hossain Alam, confirmed the development today, stating that the plaintiffs had filed the withdrawal request on August 2. Following a hearing on August 12, the court approved it.

Previously, on July 30, the same court had imposed the temporary ban in response to the plaintiffs’ petition. That order also reinstated the primary and organizational positions of 10 senior Jatiya Party leaders, including Co-Chairman Anisul Islam Mahmud, until the case was resolved.

The reinstated leaders included Senior Co-Chairmen Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud and ABM Ruhul Amin Hawlader, Secretary General Mujibul Haque Chunnu, Deputy Office Secretary-2 MA Razzak Khan, and Presidium Members Solaiman Alam Sheth (Chattogram), Nazma Akter (Feni), Zahirul Islam Zahir (Tangail), Mostafa Al Mahmud (Jamalpur), Jashim Uddin (Netrokona), and Arifur Rahman Khan (Gazipur). The court had also directed that party activities continue in order of seniority.

According to the complaint, on July 18, 2019, the party’s then Secretary General Moshiur Rahman Ranga declared GM Quader as chairman in violation of the party constitution. On December 28, 2019, Quader allegedly convened a conference and council to unlawfully approve a new constitution. Most recently, on June 28, 2025, seven presidium members were removed from all positions, including primary membership, followed by the removal of three more. Their names were also deleted from the party website.

The lawsuit was filed on July 10, 2025, on behalf of the ten dismissed leaders.

Notably, after the injunction against Quader, the Jatiya Party held its 10th National Conference on August 9, electing Anisul Islam Mahmud as chairman and Ruhul Amin Hawlader as secretary general. Kazi Firoz Rashid was elected senior co-chairman, and former secretary general Mujibul Haque Chunnu became executive chairman.

However, GM Quader’s faction has rejected the formation of this new committee.
