Australia captain Aaron Finch won the toss and chose to bowl in the series opening one-day international against New Zealand in Cairns on Tuesday.
Coming off a 2-1 series victory against Zimbabwe in Townsville, Finch hoped Australia`s pace attack could make inroads in the day-night contest to start the three-match Chappell-Hadlee Trophy contest.
"We are hoping to restrict them on a really big outfield and chase them down at the end," said under-pressure Finch, who scored just 21 runs in the Zimbabwe series.
Top-order batsman Marnus Labuschagne comes into the team at the expense of spin all-rounder Ashton Agar after Australia were stunned by a three-wicket defeat to Zimbabwe on Saturday.
New Zealand have won their last five one-day international series, including a recent 2-1 triumph in the West Indies, but last tasted a 50-over victory in
Australia against the hosts in 2009.
The northern Queensland city of Cairns last hosted international cricket in 2004.
