Hansi Flicks Barcelona claimed the Spanish Super Cup with a commanding 5-2 victory over Real Madrid in the final, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday night.
This win marks Barcelona`s 15th title in the competition, extending their record for the most Super Cup victories.
Earlier in October, Barcelona had defeated Madrid 4-0 in the first Clasico of the season in La Liga at the Santiago Bernabeu.
I the final they had fallen behind on the opening minutes but Barcelona responded quickly and scored four goals in the first half to take control of the game.
To secure their victory, at the beginning of the second half they scored another goal and made it 5-1.
Rodrygo scored the second goal for Madrid and made it 5-2, after Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny was sent off with a red card, but the damage was already done.
In the previous Clasico, Barcelona’s attacking trio of Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Lamine Yamal were responsible for all four goals.
This match was no different, they again played crucial roles, with Raphinha scoring twice, while Lewandowski, Yamal, and Alejandro Balde scored a goal each.
This was the first time in Barcelona’s history that they scored at least four goals in two consecutive Clasicos across all competitions.
The last time this happened was in 1963 when Real Madrid beat Barcelona 5-1 and 4-0.
The victory was personal for Barcelona as they had suffered a 4-1 defeat to Real Madrid in last year’s Spanish Super Cup final.
For coach Hansi Flick, who took charge of Barcelona this season, the win marked his first title with the club.
After a strong start to the season, Barcelona had encountered some challenges towards the end of last year, but they have started the new year positively, winning their first three matches, including the Super Cup final.
Barcelona’s victory in the Spanish Super Cup positions them well as they continue their season under Flick’s fine leadership.
