Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has renamed the Sheikh Hasina International Cricket Stadium in Purbachal, Dhaka. Moving forward, this prominent cricket venue will be known as the National Cricket Ground.

This change was confirmed during BCB‍‍`s 18th board meeting, held on Monday, March 3, at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

The meeting, which started at 1:30 PM, saw BCB directors Nazmul Abedin Fahim and Iftekhar Rahman Mithu addressing the media afterward.

Mithu informed reporters, “The name of the Sheikh Hasina International Cricket Stadium in Purbachal, Dhaka, has been changed to National Cricket Ground."

This renaming was not a sudden move, as earlier BCB President Faruk Ahmed had already hinted that both the name and design of the stadium would undergo modifications.

The board has now acted upon those statements, taking a step towards rebranding the stadium.

Interestingly, this change aligns with a broader government initiative.

In recent times, several sports facilities that were named after family members of former government heads have seen their names altered.

In fact, the National Sports Council, under this plan, has recently renamed 150 Upazila stadiums across the country.

This renaming of Sheikh Hasina Stadium is part of an ongoing effort to provide a fresh identity to several sports establishments nationwide, with the National Cricket Ground in Purbachal being one of the most high-profile among them.

This move by BCB reflects a significant shift in how the country’s sports venues are branded, with an emphasis on neutrality and a more nationalistic approach in naming key landmarks.
