Hashan Tilakaratne has announced that he is stepping down from his role as the head coach of Bangladesh’s national women’s cricket team.

The Sri Lankan coach has already shared his decision with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), according to a report by the cricket news website, Cricbuzz.

Tilakaratne had been appointed as the head coach of the team in October 2022, on a two-year contract.

His tenure was extended to cover the team’s recent tour to the West Indies, which marked the final phase of his contract.

After the contract ended, Tilakaratne decided to part ways with the team and informed the board of his decision.

Habibul Bashar, who oversees the Women’s Department at the BCB, confirmed Tilakaratne’s resignation, saying,

"He informed us during the West Indies tour that he no longer wished to continue his role."

Reports suggest that the BCB was not entirely pleased with the team’s performance under Tilakaratne’s leadership, which led them to reconsider renewing his contract.

They had been exploring options for a new coach even before the resignation was announced.

Realizing this, Tilakaratne chose to resign on his own terms.

The BCB is now looking to appoint a local coach for the team. Sarwar Imran, the current coach of the Under-19 women’s team, is reportedly leading the race to take over the women’s team.
