Nazmul Hassan Papon, the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), has announced his decision to resign from his position.
Although speculation about his departure had been ongoing for several days, the timing and details of his resignation became clear only on Wednesday, when he confirmed his decision during an online board meeting, according to a BCB source.
The unexpected meeting was called due to recent developments in the state of the country’s cricket.
Papon`s resignation is expected to lead to significant changes in other key BCB roles.
Papon first became BCB president in 2012, following a government appointment, and was elected to the position in October 2013. He has held the role through three consecutive terms.
On August 5, Papon lost his role as minister of youth and sports after the government fell, with Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan stepping in as interim sports adviser.
Papon had been serving as a member of parliament for Kishoreganj-6 since 2009 and took on the ministerial role in January, while continuing his responsibilities as BCB president.
The current BCB executive committee, led by Papon, was set to complete its term in October of the following year.
Faruque Ahmed new BCB president
Former Bangladesh captain Faruque Ahmed has been named the new president of BCB.
The BCB`s media department confirmed Faruque`s appointment as the new president.
Previously, Faruque served as the BCB`s chief selector but resigned due to undisclosed differences with the board.
However, following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led administration, Papon decided to step down.
