As Bangladesh prepares for its upcoming series against Afghanistan, the availability of star player Shakib Al Hasan hangs in the balance.

In a recent press conference at the Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Faruk Ahmed indicated that Shakib may not be able to participate in the matches scheduled for November 6, 9, and 11 in Sharjah.

The Bangladesh team is set to leave for the United Arab Emirates on November 4, with a squad announcement expected shortly. Faruk’s remarks suggest that Shakib’s absence is increasingly likely, emphasizing that the decision rests largely with the player himself.

“Shakib couldn’t play in the final Test at home, which shows he hasn’t been training effectively. He needs some time to prepare himself,” Faruk explained.

While an official decision hasn’t been made, the chances of Shakib missing the series appear high.

“I’m not saying he’s definitely out, but the odds are significant. It really depends on his mental state,” he added, recognizing the psychological challenges the player may be facing.

Drawing from his own experiences as a former cricketer, Faruk empathized with Shakib.

“No matter how strong a player’s mentality is, there will inevitably be some psychological impact. Not being able to play in the last Test at home would have affected him. With the lack of practice, he has to consider whether playing in the series is beneficial for both himself and the team,” he said.

Faruk confirmed that Shakib is scheduled to participate in a T10 tournament in Abu Dhabi, which could provide him with valuable preparation before the international matches.

If Shakib feels ready to play for the national team afterward, he would inform the board, and there could be an opportunity for him to be included in the squad for the ODI series against the West Indies.

Despite the uncertainties, Faruk remains optimistic about Shakib’s potential contributions.

“In ODI cricket, I believe he can still perform well for Bangladesh. After the Afghanistan series, we have three ODIs against the West Indies and the Champions Trophy in February. However, it will be challenging for him if he cannot practice with the team when he returns home,” he noted.

Having played for 17 years, Faruk expressed confidence that Shakib can adapt quickly.

“He has been part of franchise leagues and knows how to prepare. While training with the team is ideal, I don’t think it would be too difficult for him. If the selectors believe he is needed, I’m sure he can manage to play,” he remarked.

Earlier, Shakib had expressed a desire to play his last Test match against South Africa in Mirpur, but security concerns led to his withdrawal.

BCB sports advisor Asif Mahmud advised Shakib that it would be safer not to return to the country.

Faruk clarified that this decision did not come from the BCB.

“This wasn’t a decision made by the board. The sports advisor indicated that it would be problematic if he returned. I didn’t have the opportunity to address that before it was stated,” he explained.

As the series approaches, mixed reactions have emerged from fans regarding Shakib’s potential return, with protests both supporting and opposing his participation in the Mirpur Test.

Faruk acknowledged the divided opinions, saying, “There were conflicting sentiments. It wasn’t a straightforward stance either way.”

As anticipation builds for the series, the cricketing community eagerly awaits updates on Shakib’s status and the team’s preparations.

His potential absence could significantly impact the Bangladesh squad as they look to face Afghanistan in this crucial series.
