Varane scored twice-
Even if one said these exact words right before the match, you would have laughed. Even the most hardcore Real Madrid fan wouldn’t have protested. Raphael Varane, the French defender, has not been on his best form lately. He last scored about a year ago and since then he’s been a bit shaky to say the least. He’s made some crucial mistakes that allowed more than a few matches to slip from the hands of Real Madrid. And his tragic own goals were not any consolation. But on a night when they needed a win and were struggling for it, Raphael Varane stepped up.
With skipper Sergio Ramos out of the team with an injury and talks of his transfer, Real Madrid are missing that winning drive for a few matches. Zidane was absent since he had to self-isolate because of COVID, so did Nacho. But both of them were available for the match against newly promoted team Huesca.
Meanwhile Real Madrid’s right back crisis persists and Zidane had to play Odriozola whose performance was far from satisfactory. Huesca had won only one of their last 5 matches and are in the relegation zone but they were the first one to hit early in the second half. Real Madrid found an unlikely hero in the form of Varane who responded within ten minutes following a set piece.
With only six players on the bench, Real Madrid had to play with a pretty depleted squad. But they found a way to secure all three points as the French defender gave them a lead in the closing minutes of the match.
Real won 2-1 to take all three points as they insist that they are still in the title race till the end.
