Newly appointed Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has announced his first 26-man squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in June, but Neymar`s absence has raised eyebrows.
While veterans like Casemiro, Richarlison, and Antony have returned, Neymar has been left out.
Ancelotti clarified that he spoke directly with Neymar before announcing the squad. The coach emphasized that he only selected players who are currently in good physical condition.
He acknowledged Neymar’s importance to the team and confirmed that the forward is still part of his long-term plans, particularly for the World Cup.
Ancelotti urged Neymar, who recently returned to Brazil to play for Santos, to focus on getting fully fit.
Neymar has not played for the national team since suffering a serious knee injury in October 2023 against Uruguay. Though he has returned to club football, concerns remain about his fitness level.
Meanwhile, Casemiro and Richarlison, also absent from the national team since 2023, have been recalled.
Ancelotti praised Casemiro’s leadership and commitment, noting that qualities like mentality and dedication are as vital as talent in modern football.
Ancelotti’s first matches as Brazil coach are against Ecuador on June 5 and Paraguay on June 10. Brazil currently sits fourth in the South American qualifying standings.
