A female student of Jahangirnagar University was allegedly harrased in public transport over half-fare. The victim has been identified as a student of the university's 48th batch.
Students of JU have seized the bus named 'Etihash Poribohon' and blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway to protest against the incident.
On Wednesday (November 24) at around 11:30 am, students of JU protested by blocking all the Chandra-bound buses of Etihash Poribohon from Mirpur at the front gate of the university.
Earlier, on Tuesday (November 23), a female student of the Institute of Information Technology (IIT) - 48th batch of Jahangirnagar University was harassed on her way to Mirpur along with two other female friends from the JU campus.
The student who was harassed took it to social media platform Facebook and wrote: On the way to Mirpur on a Etihash Poribohon bus with two other female friends, we paid the bus-conductor half-fare, but he demanded the full fare. This led to a ruckus. When the bus stopped at Mirpur 13, all other passengers got off the bus. As we took the seat towards the end of the vehicle, we were the last to get off. Taking this opportunity, the bus-conductor walked towards us blocking our way. He passed abusive remarks and foul languge blocking our way. When we finally got off, the bus sped off, so we could not note the vehicle's number.
Jahangirnagar University Proctor ASM Feroz Ul Hasan said, “Preparations are underway to file a case in this regard. Authorities of Etihash Bus have said they will cooperate in this matter, and will help find those involved in this incident. They have also accepted all other allegations made by the students. Henceforth, students will let go of the seized buses soon."
