Reigning champions Argentina secured a perfect group-stage record with a 3–1 victory over Jordan in their final Group J match at the Dallas Stadium. With three wins from three games, Lionel Scaloni’s side finished on nine points to top the group and advance to the Round of 32.
Argentina dominated possession from the start and took the lead in the 19th minute through Giovani Lo Celso.
In the 30th minute, following a VAR review, Argentina were awarded a penalty. Lautaro Martinez converted from the spot a minute later to double the lead.
Jordan responded after the break. In the 55th minute, Mousa Al-Tamari scored from a pass by Ehsan Haddad to reduce the deficit to 2–1.
In the 60th minute, Lionel Messi came on as a substitute and immediately lifted Argentina’s attacking rhythm. In the 80th minute, he scored a trademark free-kick from outside the box to make it 3–1 and seal the victory.
With that goal, Messi took his tournament tally to six and extended his record of scoring in seven consecutive World Cup matches.
Argentina finished top of Group J with a perfect nine points and will face Cape Verde in the Round of 32.
