Eminent artist and cultural personality Mustafa Monwar has passed away. He breathed his last on Monday morning while undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Square Hospital in the capital. He was 90.
Monwar had been admitted to the hospital on June 14 after developing complications from pneumonia.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to Bangladesh`s art and cultural landscape, he was awarded the prestigious Ekushey Padak in 2004. Over the course of his distinguished career, he also received numerous national and international honors and accolades.
Mustafa Monwar was born on September 1, 1935, in Nakol village of Magura district. His ancestral home was in Monoharpur village of Shailkupa upazila in Jhenaidah district. He was the son of poet Golam Mostofa and Jamila Khatun.
After completing his secondary education at Narayanganj Government School, he initially enrolled in the science program at Scottish Church College in Kolkata. However, driven by his passion for art, he later joined the Government College of Art and Craft in Kolkata.
He graduated in 1959, securing first class first position in Fine Arts. Upon returning to Bangladesh, he began teaching at the Government Institute of Arts and Crafts at the invitation of pioneering artist Zainul Abedin. He later left academia to join the then Pakistan Television, which became Bangladesh Television after the country`s independence.
During his long career at Bangladesh Television, Mustafa Monwar played a pivotal role as a program producer and cultural organizer. He became especially well known for creating and producing popular children`s programs such as Monir Mukta and Notun Kuri, leaving a lasting impact on generations of viewers.
