2nd nuke power will “also” be constructed in Pabna: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced plans for the construction of a second nuclear power plant in the district Pabna, dismissing speculation about its location in the southern char areas. 

Country’s first nuclear power plant is located at Ruppur in the same district, and is expected to start operation this year.  

Speaking at the Bangabandhu Science and Technology Fellowship, NST Fellowship, and Special Research Grant ceremony for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, held on Monday afternoon, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of research in achieving excellence while urging researchers to prioritize projects that benefit society.

Reflecting on the vision of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina highlighted his efforts towards decentralizing power and empowering grassroots communities for socio-economic development. She mourned the tragic events of August 15, 1975, and subsequent interruption of these development initiatives, describing it as a shameful chapter in the nation‍‍`s history.

Sheikh Hasina also recounted the challenges faced after the independence, including the devastation caused by war, mass homelessness, and economic hardships. Despite these obstacles, she emphasized the notable progress made in just three years and seven months, including the establishment of schools and colleges across Bangladesh, supply of free education materials, and initiatives to improve living standards.

Science and Technology Minister Architect Yafes Osman chaired the ceremony, while President of the Parliamentary Standing Committee of the Ministry of Science and Technology  Zahid Malek also presented as a special guest. The Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology delivered a welcoming address at the event.
