India rejects interim govt’s allegations, calls statement ‘misplaced’

New Delhi has dismissed allegations made by Bangladesh’s Interim Government that members of the Awami League are engaging in anti-Bangladesh activities from Indian territory.

Responding to media queries on Wednesday, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the Government of India is “not aware of any anti-Bangladesh activities by purported members of the Awami League in India or of any action that is contrary to Indian law.”

He further stressed that India does not permit political activities against other countries to be conducted from its soil.

“The Press Statement by the Interim Government of Bangladesh is thus misplaced,” Jaiswal said.

Reiterating New Delhi’s position on Bangladesh’s political transition, the spokesperson added that India expects “free, fair and inclusive elections to be held at the earliest in Bangladesh to ascertain the will and mandate of the people.”
