A Rangpur court has sentenced a man to death for the murder of a police officer in Rangpur.
Rangpur Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Marzia Khatun delivered the verdict on Monday afternoon.
The death row convict has been identified as 26-year-old Parvez Rahman Palash from Haragach Thana.
According to case documents, Assistant Sub-Inspector Piarul was stabbed and injured by drug addict Palash in the Shahebganj area of the city on September 25, 2021. He later died while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Police filed two separate cases against Palash—one for murder and another under the Narcotics Control Act—and he was subsequently arrested.
After hearing testimony from 18 witnesses and arguments from both sides, the court sentenced Palash to death and also fined him Tk 10,000.
He was further sentenced to five years in prison after charges in two other cases were proven.
According to Additional Public Prosecutor ASM Mahamudul Karim, the death sentence was given as the charges against Palash were proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
