Bangladesh Bank withdraws dress code advisory amid public backlash

Bangladesh Bank has withdrawn a recently issued internal advisory on employee dress code following widespread criticism and a direct order from Governor Ahsan H Mansur.

The advisory, which suggested that female employees avoid wearing short-sleeved or short-length outfits and leggings, and that male employees refrain from wearing jeans and gabardine trousers, sparked significant backlash after it was reported in the media and widely discussed on social platforms.

In a press statement issued today, the central bank clarified that the document was merely an advisory encouraging employees to maintain professional and modest attire during office hours. It was not an official circular and did not constitute a formal policy decision.

According to the statement, the advisory originated from a departmental meeting and was based on considerations of the country’s social and cultural context, as well as the diverse backgrounds of staff across various levels.

The bank emphasized that the purpose of the advisory was to promote simplicity and reduce perceived disparities in attire among employees, aiming to foster mutual respect and understanding in the workplace.

However, once the matter came to the attention of the governor—who is currently abroad—through media coverage, he reportedly expressed his displeasure and instructed that the advisory be withdrawn immediately.

Bangladesh Bank further clarified that there was no requirement in the advisory for female employees to wear hijabs or burqas. “Hopefully, this circular will not affect anyone’s freedom to choose their office attire,” the statement concluded.
