BNP Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has clarified that BNP is not participating in the city elections even though there are many rumors.
He said this after offering wreaths and prayers at the memorial of Ziaur Rahman in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Saturday morning.
Mirza Fakhrul said, "We have made it very clear that BNP will not have any candidate for the post of mayor and council in the city corporation elections."
Referring to the Prime Minister`s speech on the election, Fakhrul said, "Awami League does not believe in the election. They do not believe in democracy. This government is very consciously destroying democracy. Their old goal is to establish a regime like BaKSAL.
This BNP leader said that for that purpose they (Awami League) turned the 2014 elections into a farce, where people did not go to vote. Similarly, in 2018 too, they were holding the power by voting from previous night. People did not participate there either. In the most recent polls, only 14 percent of people went to vote. So the people understand that if this government is in power, there will never be a fair election. So, the people will not participate in this election.
He said that they want to fix the image which has already been damaged abroad. A truly democratic government will be established.
