Bangladesh-India border chiefs hold 56th director-general level conference

The 56th Director-General level border conference between Bangladesh’s Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India’s Border Security Force (BSF) has begun in Dhaka. The four-day conference kicked off Tuesday morning at the BGB headquarters in Pilkhana.

The Bangladeshi delegation, led by BGB Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuluz Zaman Siddique, includes 21 members comprising senior BGB officials as well as representatives from the Office of the Chief Adviser, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Shipping, Roads Division, Department of Land Survey, Joint River Commission, and the Department of Narcotics Control.

The Indian delegation is led by BSF Director General Shri Daljit Singh Choudhury and includes 11 members, including senior BSF officials, representatives from India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, and officials from the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.

Key topics of the conference include preventing cross-border killings, “push-ins,” and illegal entries; curbing smuggling of drugs, weapons, and ammunition; addressing transboundary crimes; regulating developmental activities within 150 yards of the international border; preventing unauthorized constructions; conserving riverbanks and ensuring equitable water sharing; implementing integrated border management plans; and jointly addressing tensions caused by recent anti-Bangladesh media reports in India. Bilateral and border-related issues will also be discussed.

The conference is scheduled to conclude on the morning of August 28. The Indian delegation will return to India the same day after the closing session.
