The United States has praised Bangladesh for hosting Rohingya refugees forcibly displaced from Myanmar.
Washington also expressed gratitude to other countries in the region that have provided shelter to people fleeing violence in Myanmar.
In a statement issued on Sunday (local time), US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Thomas Tommy Piggott said, “The United States stands with the people of Myanmar, especially Rohingya and other ethnic communities who have suffered from violence and displacement.”
The statement further noted, “We commend the Government of Bangladesh for continuing to host Rohingya refugees, and we thank other regional countries for extending protection to those fleeing Myanmar.”
Monday marks eight years since the mass exodus of Rohingya from Myanmar. More than one million forcibly displaced people remain in camps in Bangladesh.
Despite multiple repatriation efforts since 2017, none have succeeded. Meanwhile, the growing influence of the Arakan Army (AA) in Myanmar’s Rakhine State has created new challenges for Bangladesh.
